Finding Center

May 21, 2025 Jeet Kune Do Chicago

Inner and Outer Balance

The way you stand and walk shows how you live your life.  Like seeing a fighter with unstable technique, they may lack balance on many levels.  Same as someone who is paralyzed by decisions, just a different arena.  Balance is not limited to a physical trick, but also a state of well-being within.

Your center of gravity influences every move through time and space.  When in balance, power flows effortlessly, and when off balance you are most vulnerable. The masters before us knew this: physical and mental balance are one in the same, however differently they may be dressed to appear.

Is your stance or ready position solid?  Maybe. But now FREEZE and feel the subtle shifts begin.  Be sure to manage your weight, don’t be caught hesitating.  Be careful not to lean forward to the point of overcommitting.  To move smoothly at once from stillness is not easy.

Finding balance within starts with brutal honesty and acceptance.  Where is your weight and balance at?  Which direction are you most stable or weak?  Uncomfortable questions are helpful because they expose more than just physical habits.  These moments of discomfort and deep work within yourself can bring clarity to the surface.  A difficult messy process at times, but how else will you bear the fruits of your labor?

When you’re knocked off balance there are a few key moments that show.  A feeling of true center, it is always in flux yet poised with integrity.  A stable posture is assuming a matter of fact but pliable position.  Structure without sensitivity or ability to maintain itself will crumble.  More than fighting in equilibrium, to me it’s about how you flourish in life.  Accept the lows as learning experiences then embrace the highs as you rise and thrive in life.

This paradox of true centeredness is being both immovable and in a state of constant adaptation.  Not a contradiction, but an aspect of completion.  Are you centered today?  Not just physically, but mentally, and more.  Accept yourself and find balance within as everything else follows your lead.  What motivates you to maintain your balance in life?  What is truly worth your efforts?
