9th IKMAF Symposium Post Event Report:
Our 9th Annual Symposium began on October 18 at 6:00 – 9:00 PM with a panel discussion on relevant issues and problems facing the martial arts. Our panel consisted of Grandmaster Scott Yates, Masters, Glenn Gavin, Kenneth Brown, Victor Altinbas, and myself. Topics of discussion included but not limited to; what are the hot-button problems currently plaguing the martial arts? Should martial arts be regulated? Should there be expiration dates on dan certificates. And, is there a workable system of ethics, values, and philosophy in the martial arts? The discussion was video taped. Copies of the DVD is available for a small fee.
On the second day, October 19, from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM was mat time! Presenters were Grandmasters Kenneth MacKenzie, Scott Yates, George Bell, Masters Glenn Gavin, Kenneth Brown, John Taube, Victor Altinbas, and myself. The theme was “beyond technique”. It was amazing how the presenters were able to dove-tail off of each other. It almost seemed like the entire day was choreographed. We had folks from Arizona, North Carolina, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania joining us. I appreciated you taking the time and making the sacrifice to come share with us.
Our banquet and award ceremony was well attended from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. The menu consisted of Caribbean cuisine. We had oxtail, jerk chicken, fried plantain, rice and beans, and mixed sautéed vegetables. Once again this was a hit. Dessert was cake and coffee. Presenters were awarded an award of accommodation and each participant was awarded a certification of participation.
We are proud of Grandmaster George Bell, Director of our Taekwondo Division for his induction into the World Taekwondo Hall of Fame. He was inducted on Friday evening and took the “red eye” to join us on the mat on Saturday. His dedication is exemplary and note-worthy.
I would like to especial thank Master Lex MacPhee and Kimberly Gilmore, assisted by Dian Glass for helping with the details of this event. Once again, it was asuccess!
We are already planning our 2014 event. It is scheduled for October 17-18, 2014. Please mark your calendars.
